Body, Breath & Voice Integrative Therapy ONE-ON-ONE

What is Body, Breath & Voice Integrative Therapy?

Body, Breath & Voice Integrative Therapy (BBVIT) is about feeling better; that is, re-integrating our joy and ease back into our lives. It is built on the premise that life, and the way we perceive life, can, through certain unhealthy patterns of thinking, lead to constrictions in our muscles, breathing patterns, and voice. BBVIT uses these Three Elemental & Creative Components to send uptake messages of ease, power, flow and freedom back up to the brain, helping us remember that we are safe, powerful, and have Space for Choice. It is about learning how to modulate your Nervous System. This unique and sophisticated holistic therapy incorporates restorative yoga, breath therapy, cognitive behavioral elements, meditation, vocal entrainment, movement re-education, and cellular-memory work. Self-awareness practices and sensory integration leads to recognition of one's unhealthy or unwanted patterns. By re-awakening and re-integrating our Three Elemental & Creative Components (body, breath, voice), learned mental constructs and compulsive physiological patterns begin to drop away. We find greater ease and flow, have more energy and less stress. This method is designed to free you from harmful mental, physical or emotional patterns that hinder you from functioning to the best of your ability. This allows healthier, more natural patterns of thinking, moving, breathing and expression to assert themselves.

Why is BBVIT Necessary?

All that we experience in our lives affects our bodies and psyches. We are all holding our collective breaths and constrict our collective muscles and fascia in order to be strong, be liked, and live our lives as best we can. Through our personal adventures we adopt patterns psychological behavior that may have been necessary to assure biological survival or social comfort in the past. When we feel anxious, our bodies tighten; when bad things happen to us, or we are subjected to violence in the media, our bodies harbour feelings of caution and fear. This is the nervous system’s natural response to threatening situations and is healthy; these responses help us feel safe. However, if we continue to exhibit these reactions long after the threat (perceived or real) has passed, we begin to react to current (safe) situations as if we are we are still being threatened. When the compensation continues past the need, there is a problem; past issues begin to pull us out of the present moment. Left unchecked, these “red-alert” warning patterns will become deeply embedded in our nervous systems, and lead to dysfunctional behavior.

How does Breath & Voice Integrative Therapy actually work?

Deprogramming unhealthy mental constructs, disrupting sub-optimal breathing patterns and derailing learned physical tension templates means less anxiety and a healthier immune system. Finding the ease and freedom of non-judgemental, uninhibited vocalizing equals more joy and increased energy. In a way, I am not teaching you anything you don't already know; I am simply helping you uncover what has been hidden away. Is the brain is playing tapes that you don't want? What if we practice the opposite of those tapes, sending messages of power, ease and safety back to the brain? We are then using the nervous system to change some of the brain's perceptions. And because by it's very nature BBVIT is playful (serious goals, playful delivery), odds are you’ll practice it more at home, making the effects more long-lasting: Stay "in it," noticing, not thinking or judging, keep it light. The subconscious and unconscious brains learn faster this way.

What can I expect in a Breath & Voice Integrative Therapy session?

You will learn about your Self in a relaxed, safe environment. You will play. Key modalities include Respiratory Therapy, Vocalization Work, Movement Re-Education, Restorative Yoga and Awareness Building. And you will have fun. Honestly... This work is fun.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on your goals and the severity of what you are dealing with. That being said, come once to see what you think; 6 or 7 sessions over an 8 - 10 week period are recommended. I give you a set of exercises specifically tailored to your needs. After practicing them on your own you will be in a different place, at which time we adjust your exercises and move forward. After the sessions you are expected to work on your own for a few months; we can then re-evaluate. It is my job to put myself out of one: A big part of this therapy that makes it unique and extremely effective is that you are able to practice building your awareness of Self and skills in noticing and self-regulation on your own. This makes your personal work the most important part of BBVIT.

Testimonials

“Before I saw David my doctor thought I may need to try an inhaler for what he called “exercise induced asthma” on my long runs. It always hit me within the first 5 or 6 km that I would feel really tight through the chest, found it hard to breathe and would start coughing up stuff. It took only two sessions with David to get results; he taught me how to breathe properly at rest and when running, and showed me stretches and strenghteners for the chest, ribcage and lungs. Thanks to him I now breathe freely when I run, I feel more relaxed, and all my record times have now been beaten!”

“When I came to David for help for my anxiety I was having two to three panic attacks a day. After one month of sessions with David I was down to one panic attack every two or three days. After three months of sessions I was experiencing one panic attack a week. And after six months of David’s sessions, my attacks would happen once a month at most. Since then my episodes have been, for the most part, a thing of the past. I have continued to use David’s ingenious and creative methods for controlling my anxiety since then. Thank you so much David, for giving me back control of my life.”

“All I have ever wanted to do was sing. As I am over 60 years of age, and could not match pitch; I was told by one teacher to “take up knitting”. I have also been suffering from panic attacks. Together, Mr. Wilson and I discovered that I was not tone-deaf after all, but that I had learned to shut off my ears and reverse my breathing (tightening my abdominal muscles inward during inhaling) due to emotional abuse I suffered as a child. Mr. Wilson led me through a process that helped me move past these troubles, joyfully, and safely. My panic attacks are now a thing of the past, I can breath powerfully and match pitch, and recently I passed my Grade 3 Toronto Conservatory Exam.”

“Dear David. I really wish to share just how profoundly affected I am from working with you during the 3-Day Nuova Intensive 2008. It has only been a few days since leaving Edmonton but I have been working on the techniques you gave me and I really do feel a difference, and my teacher has noticed a shift in me. I am amazed at how the breath can touch on one’s emotional state; I have now found that a way to release these emotions is through breathing techniques. I have also noticed where I hold and most importantly I have discovered why, in both singing and everyday life—thank you from the bottom of my heart. You have imparted just a tiny sampling of your wisdom and it has empowered me to continue on the journey.”
